Kink vs fetish: what's the difference?
People use the words interchangeably, and in everyday talk that's fine. Strictly:
- A kink is something you enjoy that adds to sex: being tied up, being praised, watching.
- A fetish is a strong attraction to a specific object, body part or material, where that thing is central to arousal: feet, latex, stockings.
Every fetish is a kink; not every kink is a fetish. Neither word means anything is wrong with you. The only line that matters is consent: between adults, agreed in advance, with a way to stop.

How common are these kinks?
More common than you'd think. The biggest study of American sexual fantasies, psychologist Justin Lehmiller's survey of 4,175 adults for his book Tell Me What You Want, found that 97% of people have sexual fantasies, and that the "kinky" ones are the norm rather than the exception. Only 4% of women and 7% of men said they had never fantasised about any form of bondage, dominance, submission or sadomasochism.

A few things jump out. Women were more likely than men to fantasise about being dominated, being tied up and masochism. Men were more likely to fantasise about watching and about their partner with someone else, which is why cuckold chat is one of the most popular pages on this site. Praise kink tops the list, and it's arguably the gentlest kink there is: being told you're good, that you did well, that you're wanted. The fact that it's searched more than almost anything else says a lot about what people are missing.
Types of kinks, explained
The list above is grouped into seven types. Here's what ties each group together.
Power and control
Dominance and submission (D/s) is the backbone of most kink. One person leads, the other follows, and both agreed to it. It covers everything from a femdom dynamic where she sets the rules, to a single mistress who gives you tasks for the week, to orgasm control, chastity and brat taming. What's being exchanged is control, not necessarily pain.
Sensation
Impact play, wax, ice, blindfolds, biting. These are about the body: making touch sharper, slower or more surprising. Sadomasochism sits here too, meaning consensual pain given or received for pleasure. The survey above found 60% of people had fantasised about inflicting pain on a partner.
Roles and fantasy

Watching and showing
Voyeurism (watching) and exhibitionism (being watched), plus the whole cuckold family: cuckolding, the cuckquean, the hotwife, stag and vixen, and the bull. The "weird" ones are fantasies most people just don't say out loud.
What is rare, according to Lehmiller, is having no unusual fantasies at all.
How to use a yes / no / maybe list
A yes / no / maybe list (sometimes called a BDSM checklist) is the simplest way to talk about kinks without it getting awkward. It works like this:
- Fill it in alone first. Use the checklist above. Be honest; nobody sees it but you.
- Swap lists with a partner. Copy yours and share it. Look for the overlap in your yeses.
- Talk about the maybes. A maybe is an invitation: "I'm curious, but I'd need it to go like this."
- Respect every no. A no doesn't need a reason and isn't up for negotiation.
- Redo it in six months. Lists change. That's normal.

Exploring a kink safely
- Consent comes first, every time. Agreed in advance, and able to be withdrawn at any point.
- Use a safeword. "Red" to stop, "yellow" to slow down is the classic, and it works.
